Into the Woods

A bewitching crew of classic fairy tale characters, including an ambivalent Cinderella, a sly Red Riding Hood, and a Witch who raps, romp through a happily ever after kingdom in the musical fairy tale, Into the Woods, to be presented by the UHS Music Department on March 13, 14, & 15, 2003 in the high school auditorium. Interweaving a hilarious mix of the traditional fair tales Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, The Bakers Wife, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White, the multi-layered plot ends happily in Act One, and goes on to explore happily ever after more deeply in Act Two.
When a Baker and his Wife learn they have been cursed with a childless life by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, and swindle, lie to, and steal from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel, and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk.) Everyones wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, and with disastrous results. What begins as a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
With wit, melody and sentiment, Steven Sondheims Into the Woods celebrates choices and companionship with a magical company of special characters, as appealing to adults as to children.
The production features a cast of fifty UHS performers, and a student orchestra of twenty. Show time is 7:30 PM on all three nights. Tickets are $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for students of any age at all performances, and can be purchased in advance from cast members, at the UHS office, or they will be available at the door for all performances (if there are any left!)
